Shin Ji-ah, Choi Ga-on and other promising winter sports participate in ‘Play Winter’ special field training


The 2018 Pyeongchang Memorial Foundation (Chairman Yoo Seung-min) will select three promising figure skating and three snowboarding prospects for special training before the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games.

This ‘Play Winter Special Field Training’ is the first attempt by the 2018 PyeongChang Memorial Foundation to foster promising athletes and selected two events included in the ‘Play Winter Academy’, figure skating and snowboarding. Playwinter’s special battery training will start in April and continue until early June depending on the event.

The Play Winter special battery training will be conducted as part of the ‘Play Winter Sports Academy’ project, which debuted in 2021. The Play Winter Sports Academy is a key legacy project of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics that provides professional instruction by utilizing the facilities and legacy of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics in order to contribute to revitalizing winter sports in Korea and expanding the base of athletes in unpopular winter sports.

The players selected for this Play Winter special field training were selected based on the recommendations of excellent players for the 2021-2022 season provided by the federation and association for each event.

In the figure skating category, Jia Shin (15, Yeongdong Middle School), silver medalist at the International Skating Union (ISU) Junior World Championships, Minsol Kwon (14, Mokdong Middle School), silver medalist at the Junior Grand Prix, and Ah-sun Yoon (16, Surigo), a promising figure skater, were selected. Gaon Choi (15, Sehwa Girls’ Middle School), who won the championship at the X Games and Dew Tour, and Geon-hee Kim (14, Siheung Maehwa Middle School), a promising half-pipe player, were selected for snowboarding.

Figure skating is leaving for training in Japan and Canada, respectively. Shin Ji-ah goes to Chiba Prefecture, Japan, and Kwon Min-sol and Yoon Ah-sun leave for Toronto, Canada in April, where they will begin intense training for about three weeks.

Meanwhile, Choi Ga-on, who was selected for snowboarding, will train in Mammoth Mountain, California, USA from mid-May, and Kim Kun-hee will leave for Gifu Prefecture, Japan in early April to train for three weeks.
