On September 13, Yeoncheon won the 40th game of the season against Pocheon City at the Team Up Campus Baseball Stadium with a 2:0 rain-cold win in the fifth inning, erasing the remaining ‘magic number 1’ and securing the regular season title regardless of the remaining games. In particular, starting pitcher Saidam Choi Jang-wan contributed to the victory with a five-inning complete game shutout and his seventh win of the season.
With the regular season title, Yeoncheon finished the season with 29 wins, 9 losses, and 2 draws, breaking the Gyeonggi League’s record for most wins in a season, which previously stood at 28 (Gwangju in 21).
Yeoncheon started the season with an eight-game winning streak to lead the league until the midway point, when injuries to players caused them to drop to second place. However, a 2-1 win and a draw against second-place Paju City at the end of the season propelled them to the top of the table and opened up a two-game lead over second place. Yeoncheon has continued its upward trend and is currently on a seven-game winning streak at the end of the season.
The batting lineup has been led by a formidable cleanup trio of Hwang Young-mook, Choi Soo-hyun, and Jeon Tae-joon, who have combined for 199 hits in the Independent League, while Park Chan-hyung, Kim Yoon-beom, and Lee Seung-woo have produced runs, and the pitching staff has been led by Ji-yoon Madangguk, who has thrown 97 innings, with Son Ho-jin and Park Jae-hyung supporting him.
“I am grateful to the players for their unwavering performance from the beginning to the end of the league,” said Yeoncheon head coach Kim In-sung. “Although there are two games left in the league, the players’ record is important and they have pride, so we will play our best and finish with a good feeling for the championship.”
Since its inception in 2015, the Yeoncheon has been operating with the full support of Yeoncheon County in local government games, and has been recognized as a best practice for independent leagues with local residents.
