Alcaraz swept past Italy’s Arnaldi 3-0 in the men’s singles round of 16 on the eighth day of the tournament in New York City on Thursday (local time) to reach the quarterfinals.

Alcaraz, who won the US Open last year and Wimbledon this year, is three wins away from his third career title and second straight US Open.

The 20-year-old, born in 2003, became only the second player since 1968, when professional players were allowed to play in majors, to reach the US Open quarterfinals three or more times before turning 21.

Only American Agassi has reached more quarterfinals than Alcaraz before turning 21.

Alcaraz’s quarterfinal opponent is Germany’s Zverev, who defeated Italy’s Cinnere 3-2 in a four-hour, 41-minute match.

Alcaraz trails Zverev’s head-to-head record at two wins and three losses.

The only other time the two have met at a major, in the quarterfinals of last year’s French Open, Zverev won 3-1.

However, in their most recent meeting, at the Madrid Open in May, Alcaraz won 2-0.

With Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, the possibility of a “new emperor vs. old emperor” matchup between Djokovic and Zverev in the final is even more likely.

Djokovic will take on Fritz of the United States tomorrow for a spot in the semifinals.

Russia’s Rublev defeated Britain’s Draper 3 and 1 to reach the quarterfinals of the men’s singles.

His next opponent will be Russia’s Medvedev, the 2021 tournament winner.

Earlier in the day, Medvedev defeated Australia’s Diminor 3-1 in the round of 16.

Medvedev holds a 5-2 head-to-head lead over Rublev.

In the women’s singles, this year’s Wimbledon champion, Czech Republic’s Bondrowsova, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over American Stearns.

Looking to win her second career major title, Vondrowsova’s next opponent will be Keith of the United States, who advanced with a 2-0 win over Pegula of the United States.

Zheng Chinwen

China’s Zheng Chinwen continued her ‘breakout’ season with a 2-0 victory over last year’s tournament runner-up, Tunisia’s Jaber.

This is the first time the 20-year-old has reached the quarterfinals of a major tournament.

Her previous best result was reaching the round of 16 at last year’s French Open, her first major.

Chung will face Belarus’ Savalenka, who came back from 2-0 down against Russia’s Kasatkina to reach the semifinals.

With world No. 1 Cibionte crashing out in the round of 16, Savalenka is the favorite to win the tournament.

However, Chung is confident, saying, “If I stay true to my tennis, I believe I can win against any player.”

A quarterfinal victory for Zheng would equal the highest semifinal finish ever by a Chinese player at the US Open, which was achieved by Li Na and Peng Shui in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
