‘Ha-Sung Kim’s 9th-inning heroics’ help San Diego beat Tampa Bay 5-4 for second straight win


With Ha-Sung Kim (28) out of the starting lineup, the San Diego Padres beat the Tampa Bay Rays for their second straight win.

San Diego defeated Tampa Bay, 5-4, at Petco Park in San Diego, California, U.S., on Monday (Sept. 19) in their 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) home opener.

After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, San Diego scored two runs in the top of the third when Juan Soto hit a grounder to put runners on first and third.

Manny Machado followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 3-1.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Lugned O’Dowd hit an RBI double with runners on first and second to give San Diego the lead for good.

In the fifth, Machado’s RBI single with two outs scored the go-ahead run.

San Diego got within 5-4 in the eighth when reliever Nick Martinez gave up a two-run homer, but the Dodgers got out of the inning without tying the game.

After escaping the jam, San Diego brought up Josh Hader to close out the ninth. He brought in Ha-Sung Kim at second base to shore up the defense and secure the victory without allowing another run.

San Diego, which has won its last three series in a row, is now 35-36 and five games out of first place in the National League West.
