Local media outlets, including ESPN, reported the news of Anthony’s retirement on Feb. 22 (KST). Anthony said goodbye to fans in a video reflecting on his career.

Anthony entered the NBA shortly after leading Syracuse University to the NCAA championship in 2003, and was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the third overall pick in the 2003 draft. The No. 1 pick was LeBron James (then of the Cleveland Cavaliers).

Anthony was a scorer with a variety of offensive routes, including post-ups and three-pointers, but he had his best years with the Denver and New York Knicks, thanks to his excellent mid-range jumper. He went through a slump after undergoing knee surgery in 2015, but bounced back with the Portland Trail Blazers. He later joined the Los Angeles Lakers, where his rival and close friend James plays. After becoming a free agent after the 2021-2022 season, Anthony sat out the 2022-2023 season and eventually announced his retirement.

Anthony is a 10-time All-Star, including leading the league in scoring in the 2012-2013 season. He has 28,289 career points, which ranks ninth all-time. He also won three consecutive Olympic gold medals, from Beijing 2008 to Rio 2016. Although he never won an NBA championship, Anthony had a stellar career that could earn him a spot in the Hall of Fame in the future.

“After I became a basketball player, my dreams were clear. Basketball was my only outlet, and I always played with pride. I want to thank my fans for always supporting me, and I couldn’t have gotten to this point without them. Now it’s time to say goodbye. I’m saying goodbye as a player, but I’m also looking forward to my future,” said Anthony. Anthony will continue to engage with basketball fans as an ambassador for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Meanwhile, Anthony’s son Kiyan is a high school basketball player. He plays shooting guard. “My legacy is not the awards and accolades I’ve received,” Anthony said of his son. It’s my son. My basketball will live on through him. I want him to always play with pride.”
