Known for her flamboyant fashion, including changing her hair color for each competition and sporting long false nails, Richardson’s athletic prowess made her a major star early on.
But two years ago, at the age of 21, she was banned from the Tokyo Olympics for using marijuana, and last year she missed the U.S. team selection and was labeled a “flashy athlete”.
This year, she cut back on the flamboyant fashion and focused more on the race, and in her first world championships, she was crowned champion.
After finishing third in her semifinal heat, Richardson went into the final determined, even ditching the false nails she had worn until the semifinals.
He got off to a slow start, but with an explosive spurt, he passed two strong favorites, Jamaica’s Fraser Price and Sherica Jackson, before crossing the finish line with his hands in the air.
He jumped up and down like a child as his victory was sealed with a meet record of 10.65 seconds.

After breaking Jamaica’s dominance and becoming the first American to win the 100 meters in six years, Richardson would go for the double in the 200 meters four days later.
